Two kinds of value
An investment coin such as the silver Maple Leaf or the Wiener Philharmoniker simply follows the silver price; its weight and fineness are fixed. A collectors’ coin can come out above the silver value, depending on the year, the mintage and the condition.
We always assess both and bid on the higher of the two. With the old Dutch circulation coins that difference matters: a guilder, a rijksdaalder and a silver tientje are 720 thousandths, a ducat 873 and the fifty-guilder piece 925.
Do not clean them. With collectors’ coins cleaning can push the value down by tens of per cent. A natural patina belongs there; leave it be and let us look.
Settled on the fine weight
A coin almost never weighs the same as the silver in it. We therefore calculate on the fine weight: the total weight times the fineness. That figure times the rate of this moment, minus our margin, gives the amount in the table above.
Modern investment coins sit at 999 or 999.9 thousandths and therefore come closest to the world market price. Older circulation coins sit considerably lower, which is why the amount per coin can differ so much even where two coins look equally large.

Questions about selling silver coins
Do you buy old guilders and rijksdaalders?
Yes. Dutch silver guilders, rijksdaalders and the silver tientje are 720 thousandths, so a good seven tenths of the weight is silver. On top of that, unusual years or small mintages can carry a collectors’ value. We work out both values and bid on whichever of the two is higher.
Is a silver Maple Leaf worth more than a silver bar?
Per gram of fine silver the difference is small, because both are directly tradable. A Maple Leaf of one troy ounce is 999.9 thousandths and therefore sits very close to the world market price. Sought-after years or original tubes and boxes can add a little on top; we tell you when that is the case.
My coins have gone dark. Should I clean them?
Please do not. Tarnish is a surface reaction with the air and says nothing about the fineness or the weight. With collectors’ coins cleaning is actively harmful, because it can take away most of the numismatic premium. Bring them exactly as they are and we will look at them with you.
Do you buy whole collections?
Yes. Announce a collection in advance and we will set time aside for it and go through the coins with you one by one. You see for each coin whether we are bidding on the silver value or on the collectors’ value. That takes longer than one amount for the whole box, but it generally yields you more.
