What do we pay for a silver half guilder?

Based on the silver rate of this moment, €1.75 per gram of fine material. As of:

½ guilder 1898-19194.725 g5 g€8.09
½ guilder 1921-19303.6 g5 g€6.16

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.

This coin is 945‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Up to 1919 in 945 silver, afterwards in 720. The weight stayed at 5 grams, so you cannot see the difference from the outside; the date tells you.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Two finenesses, one coin

Wilhelmina’s half guilder was struck in 945 silver up to and including 1919: 4.725 grams of fine silver each. From 1921 the fineness dropped to 720, at the same weight of 5 grams. That is 3.6 grams of fine silver – a quarter less.

So we always read the date and settle per period. That way you neither overpay nor get too little.

Portraits and condition

The half guilder shows Wilhelmina at different ages, from the girl’s head to the grown queen. Well-preserved pieces from certain years are popular with collectors. If the valuer spots one, he assesses it separately from the silver.

In four steps

How to sell your silver half guilder

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling silver half guilder

How much silver is in a half guilder?

Up to and including 1919 it is 4.725 grams of fine silver, from 1921 3.6 grams. Both coins weigh 5 grams.

Are half guilders from after 1930 silver too?

No. After 1930 the half guilder was no longer struck in silver. If you are unsure about a coin, bring it in; weighing and measuring costs you nothing.

My coin has turned black, is it still worth anything?

Yes. Black tarnish is simply oxidation of the silver and changes nothing about the weight. Please do not clean it.

Do you also buy half guilders of Willem III?

Yes. Bring them in; the valuer weighs and measures them and tells you on the spot what they are worth.
