A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.
This coin is 625‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Which German mark coins are silver?
Two denominations: the 5-mark pieces struck between 1951 and 1974 and the 10-mark pieces of 1972 to 1997. Both are 625 fine. Later coins in these denominations were made from base metal and hold no silver at all, so we sort them out at the table.
How much silver is in a 5 mark and a 10 mark?
The 5-mark coin weighs 11.2 grams and holds 7 grams of fine silver; the 10-mark coin weighs 15.5 grams and holds 9.6875 grams. Those fine weights are what our offer is built on, multiplied by the silver rate showing at the counter that day.
Why are these coins only 625 fine?
Because the Federal Republic set that standard for its circulating silver, well below the 900 and 925 used elsewhere in Europe. It means a 10-mark piece gives up 9.6875 grams of silver rather than its full 15.5 grams, and we settle on that fine weight alone.
Do I need to bring identification?
Yes, valid photo identification is required for every purchase: a passport, identity card or driving licence. Dutch law obliges precious metal buyers to record who they are dealing with, so we note your details before paying out. Without it we cannot complete the transaction, however small the amount.
When do I get my money?
Straight away. Smaller amounts are paid in cash at the counter the moment you accept the offer, and larger sums go by bank transfer that reaches your account within 24 hours. You never have to leave your coins with us and wait for a valuation to follow.
