What do we pay for a Silver ducat?

Based on the silver rate of this moment, €1.62 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.

This coin is 873‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

The standing knight in silver. Modern restrikes are 873; seventeenth- and eighteenth-century pieces can come out well above their metal value.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

In four steps

How to sell your Silver ducat

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Silver ducat

How much silver is in a silver ducat?

A modern restrike weighs 28.25 grams in total and holds 24.66 grams of fine silver at 873. We settle on that fine weight against the silver rate of the moment; the copper in the alloy is what makes the coin hard and carries no value of its own.

Can an old ducat be worth more than its silver?

It certainly can. The standing knight has been struck since 1659, and seventeenth and eighteenth-century examples regularly come out far above the material value. The valuer checks the year and the mint mark and tells you when the collector’s route is the better one.

Should I clean an old ducat before bringing it in?

No, please leave it exactly as it is. A natural patina belongs on a centuries-old Dutch coin, and polishing leaves scratches that can wipe out a collector’s premium entirely. For the silver value alone the appearance makes no difference to the amount we pay.

Do I need to bring identification?

Yes, valid photo identification is required for every purchase: a passport, identity card or driving licence. Dutch law obliges precious metal buyers to record who they are dealing with, so we note your details before paying out. Without it we cannot complete the transaction, however small the amount.

When do I get my money?

Straight away. Smaller amounts are paid in cash at the counter the moment you accept the offer, and larger sums go by bank transfer that reaches your account within 24 hours. You never have to leave your coins with us and wait for a valuation to follow.
