What do we pay for a silver onza (1949)?

Based on the silver rate of this moment, €1.75 per gram of fine material. As of:

1 onza31.104 g33.63 g€52.16

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.

This coin is 925‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

A coin without a face value: only the weight is shown. The forerunner of the Libertad, which followed in 1982.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

An ounce without a monetary value

In 1949 Mexico struck a silver coin that states only its weight: one troy ounce of pure silver. The reverse shows a set of scales with a liberty cap above it. The coin weighs 33.625 grams because it is 925 silver; the copper does not count.

How we value

We weigh the coin, test the fineness and settle on 31.1035 grams of fine silver. Examples in very fine condition can fetch a little more from collectors; the valuer tells you if that is the case with your coin.

In four steps

How to sell your silver onza (1949)

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling silver onza (1949)

How much silver is in a 1949 onza?

Exactly one troy ounce, 31.1035 grams of fine silver, in a coin of 33.625 grams.

Why is there no amount on the coin?

The onza was meant as silver of guaranteed weight, not as money. That is why only the weight is stated.

Is this the same as a Libertad?

No, the Libertad came later and is 999 silver. It has its own page; we buy both.

My coin has darkened, does that matter?

Not for the silver. Leave it as it is; polishing does not help.
