What do we pay for a silver 50 schilling?
Based on the silver rate of this moment, €1.75 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine silver | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 schillings 1959-1973 | 18 g | 20 g | €30.19 |
| 50 schillings 1974-1978 | 12.8 g | 20 g | €21.47 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.
This coin is 900‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
Up to and including 1973 in 900 silver, from 1974 to 1978 in 640, at the same weight of 20 grams. So the date determines the silver content.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

The date counts
A 50 schilling from before 1974 contains 18 grams of fine silver, one from 1974 or later 12.8 grams. You cannot see that difference from the outside: both weigh 20 grams. So we settle per period and show you how the offer is made up.
Themes and finishes
Like the 25 schilling, the 50 schilling commemorates composers, buildings and events, including the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. There are standard and proof finishes; for the silver that makes no difference, for a collector it sometimes does.
How to sell your silver 50 schilling
From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.
Do not polish it
With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

We assess two values
The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

Questions about selling silver 50 schilling
How much silver is in a 50 schilling?
Up to and including 1973 it is 18 grams of fine silver, from 1974 to 1978 12.8 grams. Both coins weigh 20 grams.
Why do I get more for one 50 schilling than another?
Because the fineness went from 900 to 640 in 1974. An older coin holds more silver at the same weight.
Do you also buy 100 and 500 schilling?
Yes. We weigh those silver commemoratives too and settle on their fine silver.
Must the coins stay in their sleeves?
They may. We measure through them and only take a coin out if necessary, while you are present.
