This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.

This coin is 835‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

In four steps

How to sell your Silver Belgian franc

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Silver Belgian franc

Which Belgian franc coins contain silver?

The post-war denominations: 20 francs from 1949 to 1955, 50 francs from 1958 to 1960, 100 francs from 1948 to 1954 and the 500-franc piece of 1980. All are 835 fine, and each has its own fine weight and its own line in the table above.

How much silver is in a 500-franc piece?

It weighs 25 grams in total and holds 20.875 grams of fine silver at 835. That is the largest of the Belgian silver denominations: the 100-franc coin holds 15.03 grams, the 50-franc piece 10.4375 grams and the 20-franc piece 6.68 grams of fine silver.

Do the 1958 World’s Fair coins fetch extra?

Sometimes a little. The 50-franc pieces struck around the Brussels World’s Fair are collected, so the valuer looks at condition and year alongside the metal. In most cases the silver content still decides, and we show you both figures before you choose.

Can someone else sell the coins for me?

Only with their own valid photo identification, because we register the person actually selling. If you are handling an estate or acting for a family member, bring your own passport or identity card and any paperwork showing your position, and we explain what else is needed.

What happens after I accept the offer?

You are paid there and then. Cash comes out of the drawer for smaller amounts, and larger sums leave by bank transfer the same day and arrive within 24 hours. We give you a written statement of what was weighed, what it was worth and what you received.
