What do we pay for a silver Canadian dollar?

Based on the silver rate of this moment, €1.75 per gram of fine material. As of:

Purchase prices for silver Canadian dollar per variant

1 dollar18.662 g23.33 g€31.30

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.

This coin is 800‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

The reverse shows the voyageur: a fur trader and an indigenous guide in a canoe. In 1967 a different coin with a flying goose marked the centenary.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

The voyageur dollar

Emanuel Hahn’s canoe design stayed on the Canadian dollar for over thirty years. The obverse shows George V, George VI and Elizabeth II in turn. Up to and including 1967 the coin was 800 silver; from 1968 nickel.

Some years have a different design for a commemoration, such as 1939, 1949, 1958, 1964 and 1967. They are the same silver.

How we value

We weigh, measure and test the fineness, and settle on 18.66 grams of fine silver per coin. Rare years and coins in exceptional condition the valuer looks at separately.

In four steps

How to sell your silver Canadian dollar

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

How much silver is in a Canadian dollar?

A silver dollar weighs 23.33 grams and is 800 silver: 18.66 grams of fine silver.

Are Canadian dollars after 1967 silver?

Ordinary dollars are not, they became nickel. Silver collector issues did appear later, and we test those coin by coin.

Do you also buy smaller Canadian silver coins?

Yes. The smaller denominations were also silver until the 1960s. Bring them in; we test the fineness and weigh them.

How does it differ from the Maple Leaf?

The Maple Leaf is a modern bullion coin of 999.9 silver. The silver dollar was ordinary money of 800 silver. We buy both.
