What do we pay for a silver 5 franc Belgium?

Based on the silver rate of this moment, €1.75 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.

This coin is 900‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

The Belgian écu of Leopold I and Leopold II, with the same weight and fineness as the French, Swiss and Italian five-franc pieces of the Latin Monetary Union.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

The écu of the Latin Monetary Union

In 1865 Belgium, France, Switzerland and Italy agreed that their silver five-franc pieces would be identical: 25 grams, 900 silver. The Belgian coin had followed that standard since 1832, which is why a five franc of Leopold I holds the same silver weight as one of Leopold II or a French Hercules écu.

What we assess

We weigh and measure the coin and test the fineness. Because these coins circulated for years, many weigh slightly less than 25 grams; we settle on what the coin actually weighs.

Five-franc pieces in very fine condition or from a scarce year can be worth more than their silver. The valuer looks at them and tells you.

In four steps

How to sell your silver 5 franc Belgium

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling silver 5 franc Belgium

How much silver is in a Belgian 5 franc?

An unworn piece weighs 25 grams and contains 22.5 grams of fine silver. Worn coins weigh a little less, and we settle on the actual weight.

Is a 5 franc of Leopold I worth more than one of Leopold II?

The silver weight is the same. Collector value depends on date and condition, not on the king alone; the valuer assesses that coin by coin.

Do you also buy French and Swiss five-franc pieces?

Yes. They have the same weight and fineness and we value them the same way.

Can I sell at a Belgian branch?

Yes. We have 45 locations in the Netherlands and Belgium; the valuation is free and without obligation everywhere.
