What do we pay for a silver Morgan dollar?

Based on the silver rate of this moment, €1.75 per gram of fine material. As of:

1 dollar24.057 g26.73 g€40.33

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.

This coin is 900‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Named after engraver George T. Morgan. Struck from 1878 to 1904 and once more in 1921. The mint mark on the reverse, below the wreath, can make the difference between silver value and collector value.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Date and mint mark

Morgan dollars were struck in Philadelphia (no letter), Carson City (CC), New Orleans (O), San Francisco (S) and in 1921 also Denver (D). The mint mark sits on the reverse below the wreath. Some combinations of year and mint are rare, especially from Carson City, and can fetch many times the silver.

In 2021 the United States Mint struck a commemorative issue of the Morgan dollar in 999 silver. It differs from the original and we value it separately.

Authenticity

Few coins have been forged as often as the Morgan dollar, often precisely the rare years. We weigh, measure and test the fineness. A copy in base metal is found out at once; a silver forgery of a rare year the valuer recognises by details that do not add up.

In four steps

How to sell your silver Morgan dollar

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling silver Morgan dollar

How much silver is in a Morgan dollar?

It weighs 26.73 grams and is 900 silver: 24.06 grams of fine silver.

Is my Morgan dollar worth more than its silver?

That depends on date, mint mark and condition. Ordinary, worn examples are usually settled on their silver; rare years can fetch much more.

Should I polish my dollar before bringing it?

No, please do not. Polishing sharply reduces collector value and adds nothing to the silver.

Do you also buy Peace dollars?

Yes, the successor to the Morgan dollar has the same weight and fineness and a page of its own.
