What do we pay for a silver Wedge-tailed Eagle?
Based on the silver rate of this moment, €1.75 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine silver | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 31.104 g | — | €53.25 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.
This coin is 999.9‰ pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.
The first year, 2014, was struck at 999; later years at 999.9. The difference is a fraction of a gram, and we test the fineness every time anyway.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

An eagle by an American engraver
For the first coins the Perth Mint brought in John Mercanti, formerly chief engraver of the United States Mint. His eagle sits on a branch; later years show the bird in other poses. The obverse carries the portrait of the British monarch and a face value of 1 dollar.
What we check
Weight, diameter and fineness – nothing more is needed to tell a genuine Wedge-tailed Eagle from a copy. A proof issue in its box with certificate is assessed separately, as collector value can come on top of the silver.
Small scratches or milk spots on pure silver cost you nothing with us: we settle on the 31.1035 grams, not on the shine.
How to sell your silver Wedge-tailed Eagle
From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.
Do not polish it
With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.
Bring it in
With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.
We assess two values
The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.
Paid out straight away

Questions about selling silver Wedge-tailed Eagle
Is the Wedge-tailed Eagle the same as the Kookaburra or the Koala?
No, it is a separate Perth Mint series, issued since 2014. The silver weight is the same though: one troy ounce of fine silver per coin.
Why is my 2014 coin only 999?
The first year was struck at 999, later years at 999.9. We test the fineness and settle on the silver the coin actually contains.
Do certain years have collector value?
They can, especially proof issues with box and certificate. The valuer looks at the year and the finish and tells you if it is worth more than the silver.
Do I need an appointment to sell?
It is not required, but with an appointment a valuer is ready for you. The valuation is free and without obligation.
