What do we pay for a silver Maria Theresa thaler?
Based on the silver rate of this moment, €1.75 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine silver | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 thaler | 23.389 g | 28.07 g | €39.23 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.
This coin is 833.3‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.
Virtually every example carries the date 1780, even when struck much later. So the date tells you nothing about the age of your coin.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Why it always says 1780
Maria Theresa died in 1780. Her thaler was by then so popular as a trade coin, especially in the Middle East and East Africa, that Austria kept striking it with the same date after her death. The Austrian Mint still does. Almost every thaler you come across is therefore a restrike, and just as much silver.
Genuine or not
Because the thaler is so famous, many copies exist from other mints and in other metals. We weigh, measure and test the fineness; a genuine restrike weighs 28.07 grams and is 833 silver. The edge carries an inscription, which we read as well.
An actual eighteenth-century thaler is rare and almost impossible to tell from a restrike without a specialist. If the valuer is in doubt, he says so honestly.

Questions about selling silver Maria Theresa thaler
My thaler is dated 1780, does that make it very old?
Probably not. The Maria Theresa thaler has been restruck with the date 1780 since her death, right up to today. The date says nothing about its real age.
How much silver does a Maria Theresa thaler contain?
It weighs 28.07 grams and is 833 silver: 23.39 grams of fine silver.
Are there fake thalers?
Yes, many. That is why we weigh and measure every coin and test its fineness. A copy in base metal is found out immediately.
Is a restrike valued lower?
Not for the silver: a restrike from the Austrian Mint has the same weight and fineness. Only genuine eighteenth-century pieces can fetch more.
