What do we pay for a silver Queen’s Beasts?

Based on the silver rate of this moment, €1.75 per gram of fine material. As of:

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.

This coin is 999.9‰ pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.

Ten heraldic beasts, one per release, from the Lion of England to the White Horse of Hanover. Each beast has its own reverse; the silver weight is the same for all ten.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Ten beasts, one weight

The series is based on the statues that stood at Westminster Abbey for the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. One or two beasts were added each year: the Lion of England, the Griffin of Edward III, the Red Dragon of Wales, the Unicorn of Scotland and so on. After the ten individual beasts came a completer coin showing them all together.

For the valuation the beast makes no difference: every coin holds two troy ounces of silver at 999.9. We settle on those 62.207 grams at the day’s rate.

What we look for

A two-ounce coin is thicker and wider than an ordinary ounce, which makes it easy to check on the scale: a fake that matches the diameter nearly always fails on weight. We weigh, measure and test the fineness without damaging the coin.

Milk spots and light toning are common in this series. They change nothing about the silver weight, and therefore nothing about our offer.

In four steps

How to sell your silver Queen’s Beasts

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling silver Queen’s Beasts

How much silver is in a Queen’s Beasts coin?

Two troy ounces, which is 62.207 grams of fine silver at 999.9. The weight is the same for all ten beasts and for the completer coin.

Does it matter which beast is on my coin?

Not for the silver value. Some beasts are more sought after by collectors than others; if that applies to your coin, the valuer will tell you.

Do you also buy the larger sizes from this series?

Yes. Bring them in: the valuer weighs and measures every size on the spot and settles on the silver it contains.

I have the whole series in a box, do I need to open it?

No, leave the coins in their capsules or box. We only open what is necessary, and always while you are present.
