How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.

This coin is 925‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

British silver coinage was 925 sterling up to and including 1919, and 500 silver from 1920 to 1946. After 1946 it became copper-nickel. The same applies to shillings and sixpences.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Three periods of British silver

Up to and including 1919 British coins of a half crown and below were sterling silver, 925. From 1920 up to and including 1946 the fineness was 500. In 1947 Britain switched to copper-nickel, with the same dimensions. So a half crown weighs roughly the same in all three periods, but the silver does not.

That is why we sort by date and settle each period on its own fine silver.

Shillings and sixpences too

Besides half crowns and florins, customers often bring shillings, sixpences and threepences. They follow the same date boundaries. Bring everything; we pick out the silver and weigh it.

In four steps

How to sell your silver half crown and florin

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling silver half crown and florin

How much silver is in a half crown?

Up to and including 1919 it is 13.07 grams of fine silver, from 1920 to 1946 7.07 grams. After 1946 the coin contains no silver.

What is a florin?

A two-shilling coin, a tenth of a pound. Up to 1919 it contains 10.46 grams of fine silver, from 1920 to 1946 half that.

Do you also buy British crowns?

Yes. Crowns are larger and are often kept as commemorative coins. We test the fineness and weigh them.

How do I recognise coins from after 1946?

By the date. They look very much like the silver ones, but are copper-nickel and we do not buy them.
