What do we pay for a Silver guilder?

Based on the silver rate of this moment, €1.62 per gram of fine material. As of:

1 guilder4.68 g6.5 g€7.59

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure silver it contains.

This coin is 720‰ pure. The rest of the alloy – usually copper – makes it harder and scratch-resistant, but has no value. That is why we calculate on the fine weight and not on what the scales say.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

In four steps

How to sell your Silver guilder

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Silver guilder

How much silver does a guilder hold?

Each coin weighs 6.5 grams and contains 4.68 grams of fine silver at 720. Because it is the smallest of the Dutch silver denominations, people usually bring them by the handful, and we weigh the whole lot together against the silver rate of that day.

How do I tell a silver guilder from a later one?

By the year, mostly. The silver guilders were struck from 1954 until the nickel coins took over, so a later date means no precious metal at all. If you are unsure, bring everything: sorting them at the table takes minutes and costs you nothing.

Is it worth selling only a few guilders?

Yes, there is no minimum with us. A handful of guilders is weighed and settled just like a full jar, and the valuation is free either way. If the total is modest you can be paid in cash at the counter and take it with you.

Is identification really necessary?

Yes, it is a legal requirement and we cannot make an exception. Precious metal buyers in the Netherlands must record the identity of every seller, so we ask for a passport, identity card or driving licence and note the details. The valuation itself is free and needs nothing.

Do I have to wait for the money?

No, payment happens during the same visit. Cash is handed over at the counter as soon as you accept, and larger amounts are transferred and reach your account within 24 hours. The offer is worked out in front of you first, so you know the figure before agreeing.
