Almost entirely a bullion market

Unlike gold and silver, platinum has scarcely any circulation coins behind it. What we see are investment coins, and they are all struck at the same fineness: 999.5 thousandths. The Eagle, the Maple Leaf, the Philharmoniker, the Britannia, the Koala and the Noble differ in design, not in content.

That makes the sum simple. The fine weight of a coin of one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and that figure times the rate of this moment, minus our margin, gives the amount in the table above.

Still in its capsule? Leave it there. A coin without scratches is easier to trade on, and a sealed capsule saves us checking.

How we check a platinum coin

Platinum, silver and white metals are hard to tell apart by eye, but not by measurement. We check the weight, the diameter and the thickness against the specifications of that coin, and where there is doubt we measure the fineness with X-ray analysis. That is non-destructive and happens while you watch.

The density does most of the work: platinum is 21.45 grams per cubic centimetre, which is far heavier than silver at the same size. A coin that is right on diameter and thickness but not on weight is not right, and that shows up in a few seconds.

The small number stamped into the piece. If there is none, we measure the fineness ourselves.
A kitchen scale is accurate enough for an indication.
Stones add to the weight on the scale but not to the gold price.

Questions about selling platinum coins

Which platinum coins do you buy?

The American Eagle, the Maple Leaf, the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Britannia, the Koala and the Noble. All six are struck at 999.5 thousandths, so the fineness is the same and only the design differs. Coins that are not in our list are welcome too; we then establish the fineness ourselves.

Is a platinum coin worth more than a platinum bar?

Per gram of fine platinum the difference is small, because both are directly tradable and neither has to be melted or separated. What can differ is the premium: on a coin a slightly higher premium was paid at purchase, and that premium does not come back to you on sale.

How do you tell a platinum coin from a silver one?

By the weight in relation to the size. Platinum has a density of 21.45 grams per cubic centimetre and is therefore far heavier than silver at the same diameter and thickness. We check those three figures against the specifications of that coin and, where there is doubt, measure the fineness with X-ray analysis.

Should I take the coin out of its capsule?

No, please leave it in. The capsule protects the surface from scratches, and a coin without scratches is easier to trade on. It also saves us checking, because a sealed capsule tells us something about how the coin has been kept. We only open it if there is genuine doubt, and then in your presence.
