What do we pay for a Platinum Britannia?

Based on the platinum rate of this moment, €46.20 per gram of fine material. As of:

1 oz31.104 g€1,436.91

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure platinum it contains.

This coin is 999.5‰ pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

In four steps

How to sell your Platinum Britannia

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Platinum Britannia

How new is the Platinum Britannia?

The Royal Mint began striking it in 2018, more than three decades after the gold Britannia appeared in 1987. That makes it one of the youngest platinum bullion coins on the market, and total mintages so far remain modest.

How much platinum does the coin contain?

The one-ounce coin holds 31.1035 grams of platinum at 999.5 fine, so almost the entire weight is pure metal. We settle on that fine weight against the platinum rate of the moment, and the table above shows the current amount.

Does it carry the same security features as the gold coin?

Recent Britannias share the Royal Mint’s surface animation and micro-text, which makes counterfeits easier to spot. We still run the full check on weight, diameter, thickness and fineness, because those four together are what settle the question conclusively.

Is a Platinum Britannia worth more than a gold one?

Per ounce, usually not: gold has traded above platinum for several years, so a gold Britannia generally fetches more. Both hold a troy ounce of their respective metal, so the difference comes entirely from the two market rates.
