What do we pay for a Platinum Koala?

Based on the platinum rate of this moment, €46.20 per gram of fine material. As of:

Purchase prices for Platinum Koala per variant
VariantFine platinumTotal weightWe pay
1 oz31.104 g€1,436.91

This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.

How we arrive at this amount

A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure platinum it contains.

This coin is 999.5‰ pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.

Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

In four steps

How to sell your Platinum Koala

From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.

  1. Do not polish it

With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.

  2. Bring it in

With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.

  3. We assess two values

The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

  4. Paid out straight away

In cash or by bank transfer. Larger amounts reach your account within 24 hours.

Questions about selling Platinum Koala

Why are Platinum Koalas so scarce?

The Perth Mint struck them in small numbers and only in certain years, and the series was never produced on the scale of the gold Kangaroo. That scarcity means some issues carry a collector’s value above the platinum value, which we assess for you.

Does the yearly design change matter?

It can. The koala on the reverse changes annually, and with mintages already small, a particular year can attract collectors. We check the date during the valuation and offer you whichever is higher, the metal value or the collector’s value.

How much platinum is in the coin?

The one-ounce Koala contains 31.1035 grams of platinum at 999.5 fine. We settle on that fine weight against the platinum rate showing while you are at the counter, and the table on this page shows the amount as it stands.

Should I keep the coin in its capsule?

Yes, please leave it sealed if it still is. Perth Mint coins came in hard capsules, and an untouched one protects the surface and supports any collector’s premium. We can weigh and measure without opening it in most cases.
