What do we pay for a Platinum American Eagle?
Based on the platinum rate of this moment, €46.20 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine platinum | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 31.104 g | — | €1,436.91 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure platinum it contains.
This coin is 999.5‰ pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Do not polish it

We assess two values
The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

Questions about selling Platinum American Eagle
How much platinum is in this coin?
The one-ounce version contains 31.1035 grams of platinum at 999.5 fine, so almost the whole weight is pure metal. We settle on that fine weight against the platinum rate of the moment, exactly as we do with gold coins.
Is platinum worth more than gold per coin?
Usually not at present: gold has traded above platinum for years now, so a platinum ounce generally fetches less than a gold ounce. The platinum market moves on its own, though, and our purchase price follows it minute by minute.
How do you check that it is really platinum?
By weight, diameter and thickness first, and then by X-ray analysis to establish the fineness. Platinum is markedly denser than silver and slightly denser than gold, so the combination of measurements is conclusive. The check is non-destructive and done while you watch.
Do you buy the fractional Platinum Eagles?
The half, quarter and tenth ounce Eagles were struck in the earlier years of the series and we do buy them. They are considerably scarcer than the one-ounce coin, so we assess the collector’s value alongside the metal value and pay the higher amount.
