How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure platinum it contains.

The same kangaroo, a different metal
The Kangaroo has existed in gold and silver for years. In 2018 the Perth Mint added a platinum version, with the bounding red kangaroo against a background of sun rays. The design stays largely the same from year to year, which makes the coin recognisable and easy to trade.
How we settle the platinum Kangaroo
We pay on the fine weight: 31.1035 grams of platinum per coin, against the platinum rate at the moment of sale. Because the coin is struck at 999.5, there is hardly any other metal in it and practically the whole weight counts.
During the check the valuer pays extra attention to weight and dimensions. Platinum is denser than gold, so a forgery in a lighter metal fails on the scale straight away.

Questions about selling platinum Kangaroo
What is the difference from the gold Kangaroo?
Only the metal and the price. The design is related, but the platinum Kangaroo contains a troy ounce of platinum instead of gold and therefore follows the platinum rate. We settle each on its own fine weight against the rate of its own metal.
Is the platinum Kangaroo also made in smaller sizes?
As an investment coin the Perth Mint issues it as a full troy ounce, and that is what we buy. If you have a different size or a proof edition, bring it along: the valuer weighs every piece and pays on the platinum it contains.
Does the year affect the price?
Not the metal value: every year contains the same 31.1035 grams of platinum. Any collector’s value of a special issue is assessed by the valuer at the table, but we do not promise a premium in advance.
How am I paid?
