What do we pay for a platinum Krugerrand?
Based on the platinum rate of this moment, €49.33 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine platinum | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 31.104 g | — | €1,503.61 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure platinum it contains.
This coin is 999‰ pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.
First struck in 2017, the year the Krugerrand turned fifty. The design is that of the gold coin: Paul Kruger and the springbok.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

A Krugerrand without copper
The gold Krugerrand contains copper to harden it, which is why it weighs more than an ounce. The platinum version does not need that. It is struck in 999 platinum and so weighs almost exactly its fine weight: 31.1035 grams of platinum per coin.
Put a gold and a platinum Krugerrand side by side and you see the same image in a different colour. Platinum is greyer than silver and feels heavier in the hand.
Anniversary year and later years
The first platinum Krugerrands came out in 2017, for the coin’s fiftieth anniversary, in a limited mintage. We buy those anniversary pieces too. We always pay the platinum value; whether a coin with box and certificate is worth more is something the valuer assesses at the table.
How to sell your platinum Krugerrand
From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.
Do not polish it
With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.
Bring it in
With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.
We assess two values
The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

Questions about selling platinum Krugerrand
How do I tell a platinum Krugerrand from a silver one?
By the weight and the inscriptions. Platinum is roughly twice as dense as silver, so at the same dimensions the platinum coin weighs much more. The metal is also stated on the coin itself. The valuer confirms it with an X-ray measurement.
Why does the platinum Krugerrand weigh less than the gold one?
Because the gold coin has copper in its alloy and the platinum coin does not. The gold Krugerrand weighs 33.93 grams for 31.1035 grams of gold; the platinum version contains 31.1035 grams of platinum at 999 fine.
Do you pay more for the 2017 anniversary edition?
We always pay the platinum value. An anniversary piece in proof with box and certificate can have collector’s value; the valuer assesses that at the table, without us promising a premium in advance.
Can I come in without an appointment?
You are welcome, but with an appointment you are seen straight away. At all 45 of our locations the valuation is free and without obligation, and you only decide after hearing the offer.
