The Royal Mint’s first platinum coin
With the Lion of England in 2017 the Royal Mint struck its first platinum investment coin. Every beast in the series followed: the griffin, the dragon, the unicorn and the rest of the ten statues that stood outside Westminster Abbey at the coronation of 1953.

Every coin in the series contains 31.1035 grams of platinum at 999.5. That is what we pay on, against the platinum rate of the moment. The beast on the reverse changes nothing about the metal value.

Why does the coin weigh 31.21 grams and not 31.10?
Because 999.5 platinum still contains a fraction of other metal. The coin weighs 31.21 grams and contains a full troy ounce of platinum, 31.1035 grams. We pay on that fine weight.
Is the platinum Queen's Beasts also made as a quarter ounce?
As an investment coin the Royal Mint issues the platinum version as a full ounce. If you have another size, bring it along; the valuer weighs it and pays on the platinum it contains.
How does this coin relate to the Tudor Beasts?
The Tudor Beasts are the successor: a new series of heraldic beasts, this time from Hampton Court Palace, also in platinum since 2022. Both series contain a troy ounce of platinum and we buy both.
