What do we pay for a platinum Lunar?
Based on the platinum rate of this moment, €49.33 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine platinum | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 31.104 g | — | €1,503.61 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure platinum it contains.
This coin is 999.5‰ pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.
One animal of the Chinese zodiac per year. The platinum ounce has been part of the Perth Mint’s Lunar Series III since 2020.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

Twelve animals, one weight
The Perth Mint’s Lunar series follows the Chinese zodiac: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake and so on. Since 2020 a platinum ounce has joined the gold and silver. The animal changes every year, the weight does not: each coin contains 31.1035 grams of platinum.
Collector’s series or investment?
Many people buy a Lunar for the animal of their birth year. When you sell, we pay on the platinum, whatever the animal. If you have a complete series or a proof piece, bring the box and certificate; the valuer checks whether there is more in it than the metal.
How to sell your platinum Lunar
From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.
Do not polish it
With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.
Bring it in
With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.
We assess two values
The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

Questions about selling platinum Lunar
Is the platinum Lunar the same coin as the gold Lunar?
It is the same Perth Mint series, but a different metal. The gold Lunar has existed much longer; the platinum ounce was added in 2020. We settle each against the rate of its own metal.
Does the animal make a difference to the price?
Not to the metal value: every year contains the same troy ounce of 999.5 platinum. Some years are more sought after by collectors than others; the valuer assesses that at the table, without us promising a premium in advance.
I have several animals. How does that work?
Bring them all. Each coin is weighed separately and settled on its own fine weight, and we then add up the amounts. Let us know about a larger lot in advance, so that enough money is ready.
How quickly do I get my money?
Straight away. Once you agree we pay in cash or by bank transfer; a transfer reaches your account within 24 hours.
