What a rate actually is
The platinum rate is the price traders on the world market are paying for pure platinum at this moment. Internationally it is quoted in dollars per troy ounce, a measure of weight of 31.1035 grams used only for precious metal. We convert that quotation into euros per gram, at the exchange rate of that same moment.
That conversion explains why the price here can move while the international news is quiet: if the relation between the euro and the dollar changes, what you receive changes with it. We fetch the quotation every minute, so that what you see really does apply at the moment you are looking.
Why the platinum rate moves
Platinum is in the first place an industrial metal. The greatest part goes into catalytic converters, and beyond that into the glass and chemical industries and into hydrogen technology. Jewellery makes up only a modest share of demand.
The supply is moreover strongly concentrated: by far the greatest part comes from a handful of mines, with South Africa foremost. Strikes, power cuts or breakdowns there therefore work straight through into the rate, faster than with gold.
Because the market is smaller than that of gold, the same quantities of buy and sell orders have a greater effect here. That explains the sharper movements on days without any clear news.
From rate to purchase price
The rate above applies to pure platinum. Your piece of jewellery or your coin is almost never a hundred per cent: the fineness decides how much pure metal is really in it. That proportion times the rate times the weight is the basis of what you receive.
There is a difference as well between the rate and what we pay. Between your piece and tradable material lie melting, separating and assaying, and those costs make up our margin. We show that margin openly on the price page, so that you can work out for yourself how we get from the rate to the amount on the table. With bars and coins that difference is smallest, because nothing has to happen to them.

Where do these rates come from?
From the international precious metal market, by way of our rate supplier Swissquote. The quotations are given in dollars per troy ounce; we convert them at the current euro rate into euros per gram and store every measurement, so that the movement can be looked back over.
What is the spot price?
The spot price is the price for immediate delivery of pure precious metal on the world market, quoted in dollars per troy ounce (31.1 grams). That quotation forms the basis of every purchase price. We convert the spot price into euros per gram, so that you can compare it directly with our prices.
Why does the gold price in euros move differently from the one in dollars?
Gold is quoted worldwide in dollars. If the euro-dollar rate changes, the gold price in euros changes with it – even when the dollar price stays the same. For what you receive, only the euro price per gram at the moment of sale counts.
Can I fix a rate?
Yes, with larger lots we can fix the rate for an agreed period. That way you know in advance where you stand, even if the market moves between the agreement and the delivery. Please contact the head office in Eindhoven for that.
