What do we pay for a platinum Platypus?
Based on the platinum rate of this moment, €49.33 per gram of fine material. As of:
| Variant | Fine platinum | Total weight | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 31.104 g | — | €1,503.61 |
This price applies regardless of the year and the mint. With a rare year or exceptional condition the collector’s value can be higher than the material value – then we say so, even if that means you are better off not selling us the coin.
How we arrive at this amount
A coin is precious metal in a recognisable shape. What it fetches therefore depends almost entirely on the fine weight: the weight of pure platinum it contains.
This coin is 999.5‰ pure, so the fine weight and the total weight are almost the same.
The Perth Mint’s platypus, the platinum investment coin that the platinum Kangaroo succeeded in 2018.
Not sure whether your coin is genuine? We check weight, diameter, thickness and – if in doubt – the density with X-ray analysis. Non-destructive: your coin stays intact.

A platypus under water
For its platinum ounce the Perth Mint chose one of Australia’s strangest animals: the platypus, shown swimming under water. The coin appeared in 2011 and became one of the most recognisable platinum investment coins in the world, until the platinum Kangaroo took its place.
Settled on the platinum
The Platypus is an investment coin, so what counts is the metal: 31.1035 grams of platinum per coin. We multiply that by the platinum rate of the moment and deduct our margin; the amount is in the table on this page.
A single coin, a capsule or a full tube: all are welcome. Larger quantities can be announced in advance, so that enough money is ready.
How to sell your platinum Platypus
From walking in to being paid usually takes less than half an hour.
Do not polish it
With collector coins, cleaning can push the value down considerably. A natural patina belongs to them.
Bring it in
With or without an appointment, at one of our 45 locations. If the coin is in a holder, leave it in there.
We assess two values
The precious metal and what the coin itself does: year, mintage and condition. You get the higher of the two.

Questions about selling platinum Platypus
Is the platinum Platypus still available?
The Perth Mint has succeeded the Platypus as its platinum investment coin with the platinum Kangaroo, struck since 2018. For selling it makes no difference: we buy every year of the Platypus and pay on the platinum.
How much platinum does it contain?
One troy ounce, so 31.1035 grams of platinum at 999.5 fine. Because there is hardly any other metal in the alloy, practically the whole weight of the coin counts towards the price.
My coin is in a capsule. Does it need to come out?
No, leave the capsule on. We can check weight and dimensions perfectly well like that, and the capsule protects the surface. If a closer look is needed, we take the coin out while you are present.
What should I bring to the appointment?
The coins and valid identification: a passport, identity card or driving licence. Identification is a legal requirement for every purchase. The valuation is free and without obligation.
