What the carat stamp says
Carat is the measure of the gold content: 24 carat is pure gold. The stamp inside the piece gives that same fineness in thousandths, and that figure decides what a gram of your piece is worth against the daily rate.
- 999 – 24 carat, as pure as gold comes in the trade; usual on bars
- 916 – 22 carat, the fineness of the Krugerrand and the sovereign
- 875 – 21 carat, the standard for jewellery from the Gulf states
- 750 – 18 carat, the European standard for better jewellery work
- 585 – 14 carat, the fineness we see most often on the table
- 375 – 9 carat, British jewellery gold
- 333 – 8 carat, the lowest fineness that may still be called gold here
No stamp? Then we measure
A stamp is an indication, not proof, so we check it in every case. With gold that happens with an acid test or – where there is doubt, or with valuable pieces – with X-ray fluorescence analysis. That method is non-destructive: your piece stays intact, and the measurement takes place at the table while you watch.
The colour says nothing about the fineness. White gold is gold made white with metals such as palladium or nickel and usually carries a thin layer of rhodium; rose gold owes its warm tint to a larger share of copper. A white and a yellow ring with the same 585 stamp are worth exactly the same per gram.

Questions about selling gold per carat
How do I find the carat of my gold?
Nearly every piece carries a small number stamped somewhere inside: 585, 750 or 916. That figure is the fineness in thousandths, so 585 means 14 carat and 750 means 18 carat. Older pieces sometimes read 14K instead of 585; both mean the same thing. If you cannot find a stamp, we establish the fineness for you free of charge.
Does white gold fetch less than yellow gold?
No. At the same carat stamp the price per gram is identical. White gold is simply gold that has been made white with other metals, and the thin layer of rhodium over it changes nothing about the gold underneath. A rhodium layer worn away by the years therefore does not push the price down either.
What if there is no stamp at all?
Then we measure. With gold that happens with an acid test or, where there is doubt or the piece is valuable, with X-ray fluorescence analysis. That method is non-destructive, so your piece stays intact, and it takes place at the table in your presence. Unstamped gold is bought exactly like stamped gold.
Do you buy low carats such as 8 and 9 carat as well?
Yes. Eight carat is a third pure gold and nine carat a little over a third, so the yield per gram is modest, but a drawer full of chains and bracelets adds up quickly. We simply weigh it along with the rest and settle on the fine gold that is actually in there.
