How do you recognise 14 carat gold?
Look for the stamp 585 – usually on the inside of a ring, on the clasp of a chain or on the back of a pendant. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 585 means 58.5% gold.
Carat is another way of expressing the same thing: 14 carat stands for 14 parts gold out of 24. Both notations occur, depending on the country in which the piece was made.
If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your jewellery stays intact.
Where you come across 14 carat gold
Fourteen carat is the fineness we see on the table most often. In the Netherlands and Germany it was the usual jewellery gold for decades: strong enough to wear every day and affordable enough for a present.
A little more than half of the weight is pure gold. That explains why a 14 carat ring yields clearly less per gram than an 18 carat ring that looks exactly the same.
Older pieces sometimes still carry the marking 14K instead of 585; both mean the same thing. Wedding rings, curb bracelets and men’s signet rings are the most common forms.

What does the stamp 585 on gold mean?
It means that 585 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure gold, or 58.5%. In carats the same fineness is written as 14 carat, and older pieces sometimes carry the marking 14K instead. Both refer to one and the same alloy and to the same price per gram.
What is a gram of 14 carat gold worth?

Why does 14 carat yield less than 18 carat?
Because there is less gold in it. A gram of 585 contains 58.5% pure gold and a gram of 750 contains 75%, so at the same weight and the same rate the 18 carat piece is worth more. Two rings can look identical and still differ considerably in yield.
