Two values, one valuation
Most gold jewellery is worth exactly its material value: weight times gold content times the rate of the day. With us that sum is always the floor of the offer. But not every piece stops there: a recognisable branded piece – Cartier, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany – has a second market where the price sits above the gold value, sometimes well above.
That is why we look at every piece first as jewellery and only then as gold. If we find a trade value that is higher, you get that one – and we tell you which of the two amounts it was.
Never let a branded piece be settled as scrap gold before someone has looked at it. A Love bracelet or a Trinity ring is worth clearly more in the trade than the gold it contains.
What the carat stamp means per gram
Carat is the measure of the gold content: 24 carat is pure gold. The stamp in the piece gives that same content in thousandths – and that figure decides what a gram of your jewellery is worth against the rate of the day.
- 333 – 8 carat, a third gold; common on German jewellery
- 375 – 9 carat, mainly English work
- 585 – 14 carat, the Dutch standard
- 750 – 18 carat, usual on French and Italian work and on branded jewellery
- 916 – 22 carat, widespread in jewellery from Turkey and the Middle East
- 999 – 24 carat, all but pure; rare in jewellery, usual in bars
White, yellow, rose gold: same content, same price
Colour says nothing about the content. White gold is gold made white with metals such as palladium or nickel and usually carries a thin layer of rhodium; rose gold owes its warm tint to a larger share of copper. A white gold and a yellow gold ring with the same 585 stamp are worth exactly the same per gram.
When the rhodium layer on white gold wears, a yellow tinge shows through. For the valuation that makes no difference: we settle on the gold content, not on the shine. So do not have a piece touched up before you bring it in.
Stones are valued separately
If there is a diamond or a coloured gemstone in the setting, we value it apart from the gold. You see two amounts and decide for yourself: sell everything, or have the stone taken out free of charge and keep it.
Small decorative diamonds usually count for little, but a stone from around half a carat upwards can raise the proceeds noticeably. A gemmologist is based at the head office in Eindhoven for that assessment.
Sell as jewellery or as gold?
The rule of thumb: if the piece is dated, broken or unsigned, the gold value is the honest maximum – we melt and separate ourselves, so there is no intermediate trade left in between. If it is a branded item, a signed design or a piece with a good stone, the second look pays off.

Leave it as it is
No polishing and no repairs. With branded jewellery the condition counts, and for the gold value a break changes nothing.
We look for the stamp
With a loupe, because it often sits in the clasp or on the inside of the ring. If there is nothing, we measure the content.

The material value and, if the piece has one, the trade value as jewellery. You get the higher of the two.

Questions about selling gold jewellery
How do I know whether my jewellery has brand value?
Look for a signature or brand name on the inside, often together with a serial number. If you are unsure, simply bring the piece along: we recognise the common makers and their stamps at the table, and we tell you what we find.
What is a 14-carat chain worth per gram?
585 thousandths of the gold rate per gram, less our margin. Weigh the chain and multiply by 0.585 and the rate of the day, and you know the order of magnitude. The current price per carat is on our gold price page and is exactly the same at the table.
Is white gold worth as much as yellow gold?
Yes, at the same carat stamp the price per gram is identical. White gold is simply gold made white with other metals; the colour changes nothing about the content. A worn rhodium layer therefore does not push the price down either, and there is no point in having it replated first.
Do the stones count towards the price?
Yes, and always separately. We value the stone and the gold apart from each other and then add the amounts together, so that you see per part where the value sits. If you would rather keep the stone and sell only the gold, we take it out of the setting free of charge while you wait.
My jewellery is broken, does that push the price down?
Not for the gold value: there only weight and content count, and a break changes neither of them. The condition weighs in only with a branded piece that carries a trade value of its own. Repairing before selling therefore almost never pays off.
Do you buy gold-plated jewellery as well?
No. Plating is a layer of a few micrometres of gold over a base metal, and separating it costs more than it yields. If you are unsure whether something is solid or plated, we will look at it with you free of charge.
What identification do I need in order to sell?
You need valid photo identification: a passport, identity card or driving licence. We are legally required to record your details when buying precious metal, jewellery and watches. Without valid identification we are not allowed to buy anything.
When do I receive my money after the sale?
You receive your money as soon as you have agreed to the valuation. Smaller amounts are paid in cash; larger amounts reach your account by bank transfer within 24 hours. You sign the purchase receipt first, and payment follows.
