How do you recognise 24 carat gold?
Look for the stamp 999 – usually on the inside of a ring, on the clasp of a chain or on the back of a pendant. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 999 means 99.9% gold.
Carat is another way of expressing the same thing: 24 carat stands for 24 parts gold out of 24. Both notations occur, depending on the country in which the piece was made.
If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your jewellery stays intact.
Where you come across 24 carat gold
Twenty-four carat is as pure as gold comes in the trade. That also makes it the softest: you can press a mark into it with a fingernail, which is why jewellery meant to be worn every day is seldom made of it.
You come across it above all as a bar and as an investment coin, and in jewellery from Asia and the Middle East, where gold is traditionally worn as savings. The colour is deeper and more orange than the yellow gold that is usual in the Netherlands.
Because nothing has to come off before it is tradeable again, this fineness sits closest to the world market price.
What you see here is the pure material value. 99.9% of the rate, times the weight, with nothing deducted. We fetch that rate from the world market every minute and convert it at the euro rate of that moment.

Questions about 24 carat gold
What does the stamp 999 on gold mean?
It means that 999 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure gold, or 99.9%. That is the highest fineness in the trade and the same fineness used for bars and investment coins. In carats the same thing is written as 24 carat, so both markings refer to one and the same metal.
What is a gram of 24 carat gold worth?
The amount follows the world market rate and therefore changes every minute; the current figure stands at the top of this page. The calculation itself never changes: the gold rate per gram times 99.9%, times the weight of your piece. The table above shows that for one to a hundred grams.
My piece has no stamp – can you still buy it?
Yes. Without a stamp we establish the fineness ourselves, with an acid test or, with valuable pieces, with an X-ray analysis that leaves the metal untouched. That happens at the table while you watch, it costs nothing, and only afterwards is an amount worked out.
Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?
Yes, the price you see here is the same price you get at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site is what applies.
