How do you recognise 21 carat gold?
Look for the stamp 875 – usually on the inside of a ring, on the clasp of a chain or on the back of a pendant. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 875 means 87.5% gold.
Carat is another way of expressing the same thing: 21 carat stands for 21 parts gold out of 24. Both notations occur, depending on the country in which the piece was made.
If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your jewellery stays intact.
Where you come across 21 carat gold
Twenty-one carat is unusual in the Netherlands, but it is the norm for jewellery from the Gulf states. Anyone bringing back a chain from Dubai, Saudi Arabia or Egypt often finds precisely this fineness.
It sits exactly between the Asian 916 and the European 750: high enough for the deep gold colour that is wanted there, and just hard enough to wear.
Because 875 occurs so little here, it is now and then mistaken for 750 in a quick assessment. That is why we always measure the fineness ourselves, even when there is a stamp in the piece.
What you see here is the pure material value. 87.5% of the rate, times the weight, with nothing deducted. We fetch that rate from the world market every minute and convert it at the euro rate of that moment.

Questions about 21 carat gold
What does the stamp 875 on gold mean?
It means that 875 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure gold, or 87.5%. In carats that is written as 21 carat, a fineness that is standard in the Gulf states but seldom seen in the Netherlands. It sits between the Asian 916 and the European 750.
What is a gram of 21 carat gold worth?
The amount follows the world market rate and therefore changes every minute; the current figure stands at the top of this page. The calculation itself never changes: the gold rate per gram times 87.5%, times the weight of your piece. The table above shows that for one to a hundred grams.
Can 875 be mistaken for 750?
It happens, because 875 occurs so rarely in the Netherlands that a quick glance at the stamp can read it as the familiar 750. The difference of 12.5 percentage points is worth real money on a heavy chain, so we always measure the fineness ourselves rather than trusting the stamp alone.
Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?
Yes, the price you see here is the same price you get at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site is what applies.
