How do you recognise 8 carat gold?
Look for the stamp 333 – usually on the inside of a ring, on the clasp of a chain or on the back of a pendant. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 333 means 33.3% gold.
Carat is another way of expressing the same thing: 8 carat stands for 8 parts gold out of 24. Both notations occur, depending on the country in which the piece was made.
If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your jewellery stays intact.
Where you come across 8 carat gold
Eight carat is the lowest fineness that may still be called gold in the Netherlands: exactly a third of the weight is pure gold. It comes above all from Germany and Austria, where 333 was long the usual choice for affordable jewellery.
Because of the high copper content, 333 has a redder colour than other gold and can tarnish somewhat over time. That says nothing about whether it is genuine.
The yield per gram is modest, but with a box full of chains and bracelets it soon adds up. We simply weigh it along with the rest and settle on the fine gold that is in it.

Yes. Eight carat contains a great deal of copper alongside its third of gold, and copper reacts with the air, so the piece takes on a redder or duller look over the years. That surface change says nothing at all about the fineness, and it does not affect what we pay.
