How do you recognise 18 carat gold?

Look for the stamp 750 – usually on the inside of a ring, on the clasp of a chain or on the back of a pendant. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 750 means 75% gold.

Carat is another way of expressing the same thing: 18 carat stands for 18 parts gold out of 24. Both notations occur, depending on the country in which the piece was made.

If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your jewellery stays intact.

Where you come across 18 carat gold

Eighteen carat is the European standard for better jewellery work. Three quarters of the weight is pure gold; the rest determines the colour. Copper makes it red gold, silver keeps it yellow, and palladium or nickel turns it into white gold.

Virtually all branded jewellery and gold watch cases are 750, from Cartier to Rolex. Wedding rings in the higher price bracket carry this stamp as well.

With white gold there is usually a thin layer of rhodium over the top to make it bright white. That layer wears away over the years – that is not a defect, and it changes nothing about the gold fineness underneath.

What you see here is the pure material value. 75% of the rate, times the weight, with nothing deducted. We fetch that rate from the world market every minute and convert it at the euro rate of that moment.

Larger quantities

Above a certain weight we retain less

The time, the test and the transport to the refinery cost almost as much for ten grams as for a kilo. On a larger lot that weighs far less per gram – and we pass that back to you.

Questions about 18 carat gold

What does the stamp 750 on gold mean?

It means that 750 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure gold, or 75%. In carats the same fineness is written as 18 carat. It is the European standard for better jewellery work, and it is the stamp you find in most branded pieces and gold watch cases.

What is a gram of 18 carat gold worth?

The amount follows the world market rate and therefore changes every minute; the current figure stands at the top of this page. The calculation itself never changes: the gold rate per gram times 75%, times the weight of your piece. The table above shows that for one to a hundred grams.

Is white gold worth the same as yellow gold?

At the same fineness, yes. White gold of 750 contains exactly as much pure gold as yellow gold of 750; only the other quarter of the alloy differs, usually palladium or nickel instead of copper. The thin rhodium layer on top has no effect on what we pay per gram.

Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?

Yes, the price you see here is the same price you get at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site is what applies.
