How do you recognise coin gold?
On a coin the fineness is seldom stamped: it follows from what the coin is. A Dutch ten-guilder piece, a French twenty-franc napoleon, a Swiss vreneli and an American double eagle are all struck in 900 – nine hundred parts gold in every thousand, which comes to 21.6 carat.
On jewellery the stamp 900 does occur, but rarely here; it is usually older work or a watch case. The copper shows in the colour: a shade redder than the 750 that is common in the Netherlands.
If you are not sure what you have, bring it in. We identify the coin first and measure the fineness second – with an acid test, or with X-ray analysis for anything valuable. That last method is non-destructive: your piece stays intact.
Why coin gold is weighed twice
Ninety per cent was the coin standard for centuries because it wears well: the tenth part copper made a coin hard enough to pass from hand to hand without losing gold. That is also why so much of it survives – these pieces were made to circulate.
Which brings up the point that matters most on this page: a coin can be worth more as a coin than as gold. A ten-guilder piece from 1933, or an uncirculated vreneli, carries a collector's value on top of its metal. We check that before anything else, and we melt nothing that is worth more struck.
So the amount below is a floor, not a ceiling. It is what the metal in the coin is worth today; what the coin itself is worth is a separate question, and one we answer at the table.
What you see here is the pure material value. 90% of the rate, times the weight, with nothing deducted. We fetch that rate from the world market every minute and convert it at the euro rate of that moment.

Questions about Coin gold
What does the stamp 900 on gold mean?
It means that 900 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure gold, or 90%. In carats that comes to 21.6, and that is why the trade calls it coin gold rather than a carat figure: it is the alloy gold coins were struck in, from the Dutch ten-guilder piece to the American double eagle.
Is my gold coin worth more than the gold in it?
Often it is. Rarity and condition add a collector's value on top of the metal. An uncirculated vreneli or a scarce year of the ten-guilder piece is worth more struck than melted, so we identify the coin before we weigh it, and we buy it as a coin whenever that pays you better.
Do you buy 900 jewellery as well as coins?
Yes. The stamp 900 turns up on older jewellery and on watch cases, and we buy it by weight and fineness like any other gold. Nine hundred thousandths is higher than the 750 that is usual in the Netherlands, so it pays more per gram than a comparable Dutch piece.
Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?
Yes, the price you see here is the same price you get at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site is what applies.
