How do you recognise 22 carat gold?
Look for the stamp 916 – usually on the inside of a ring, on the clasp of a chain or on the back of a pendant. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 916 means 91.6% gold.
Carat is another way of expressing the same thing: 22 carat stands for 22 parts gold out of 24. Both notations occur, depending on the country in which the piece was made.
If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your jewellery stays intact.
Where you come across 22 carat gold
Twenty-two carat is the fineness of the best-known investment coins: the Krugerrand and the British sovereign are both made of it. The copper added to it makes the coin hard enough to circulate without gold wearing off.
In jewellery you see 916 above all in Indian and Turkish work, often in the form of chains and bracelets. The colour is warmer and fuller than that of 18 carat.
If your piece carries the stamp 916 or the marking 22K, it contains well over nine tenths pure gold – considerably more than most of the jewellery on sale in the shops here.
What you see here is the pure material value. 91.6% of the rate, times the weight, with nothing deducted. We fetch that rate from the world market every minute and convert it at the euro rate of that moment.

Above a certain weight we retain less
The time, the test and the transport to the refinery cost almost as much for ten grams as for a kilo. On a larger lot that weighs far less per gram – and we pass that back to you.
| Weight of the lot | Price per gram (22 karaat) | What you get extra | Margin |

Questions about 22 carat gold
What does the stamp 916 on gold mean?
It means that 916 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure gold, or 91.6%. In carats the same fineness is written as 22 carat, and some pieces carry the marking 22K instead of the number. Both point to exactly the same alloy and to the same price per gram with us.
What is a gram of 22 carat gold worth?
The amount follows the world market rate and therefore changes every minute; the current figure stands at the top of this page. The calculation itself never changes: the gold rate per gram times 91.6%, times the weight of your piece. The table above shows that for one to a hundred grams.
Is a Krugerrand worth more than its gold?
Sometimes, yes. A Krugerrand is 22 carat and therefore has a material value we can work out to the gram, but a coin in good condition can be worth more as a coin than as metal. We assess both sides and pay out on whichever of the two comes out higher.
Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?
Yes, the price you see here is the same price you get at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site is what applies.
