How do you recognise 9 carat gold?

Look for the stamp 375 – usually on the inside of a ring, on the clasp of a chain or on the back of a pendant. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 375 means 37.5% gold.

Carat is another way of expressing the same thing: 9 carat stands for 9 parts gold out of 24. Both notations occur, depending on the country in which the piece was made.

If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your jewellery stays intact.

Where you come across 9 carat gold

Nine carat is the British jewellery gold. In the United Kingdom it has been the most usual fineness for more than a century, and much of what we see of it originally comes from there.

A good third of the weight is gold; the rest is mainly copper and silver. That makes 375 harder than gold of a higher carat, and after years of wear it sometimes goes a little duller.

It is still gold and we simply buy it, but count on a clearly lower yield per gram than with 585 or 750 – the difference lies literally in how much gold is in it.

What you see here is the pure material value. 37.5% of the rate, times the weight, with nothing deducted. We fetch that rate from the world market every minute and convert it at the euro rate of that moment.

Above a certain weight we retain less

The time, the test and the transport to the refinery cost almost as much for ten grams as for a kilo. On a larger lot that weighs far less per gram – and we pass that back to you.

Questions about 9 carat gold

What does the stamp 375 on gold mean?

It means that 375 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure gold, or 37.5%. In carats the same fineness is written as 9 carat. It has been the most usual jewellery gold in the United Kingdom for over a century, which is why so much of it reaches us from there.

What is a gram of 9 carat gold worth?

The amount follows the world market rate and therefore changes every minute; the current figure stands at the top of this page. The calculation itself never changes: the gold rate per gram times 37.5%, times the weight of your piece. The table above shows that for one to a hundred grams.

Is 9 carat still real gold?

Yes. Nine carat is a genuine gold alloy with just over a third of its weight in pure gold, and we buy it exactly as we buy any other fineness. The yield per gram is simply lower than with 585 or 750, because there is less gold in the same gram.

Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?

Yes, the price you see here is the same price you get at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site is what applies.
