Platinum is expressed in alloys
Platinum is not measured in carats but in thousandths. In jewellery 950 is by far the most common; industrial platinum is often purer still. The stamp usually appears together with the abbreviation PT or PLAT.
- 999 – bars, laboratory material and industrial crucibles, wire and gauze
- 950 – the jewellery fineness par excellence, found on most platinum wedding rings
- 900 – the usual alloy early in the last century, with ten per cent iridium
- 850 – the hardest of the common alloys; chains, clasps and hinges
Two stamps in one piece? That happens: a chain of 850 with a pendant of 950. We weigh those parts separately, so that each part is settled on its own fineness.
How we tell platinum apart
Platinum feels noticeably heavier than white gold at the same size – the density is 21.45 grams per cubic centimetre. It does not tarnish either, and unlike white gold it needs no rhodium layer. Where you are unsure between the two, that weight is often the first clue.
We then confirm it by measurement: X-ray analysis establishes the fineness before anything is calculated, non-destructively and in your presence. With business lots we also ask about the provenance, which is a legal requirement rather than mistrust and is quickly settled with a disposal document or a company name.

Questions about selling platinum per alloy
How do I recognise platinum?
By the stamp: 950, 900 or 850, sometimes with PT or PLAT in front of it. Platinum is moreover strikingly heavy – at equal volume a good ten per cent heavier than gold – and it does not tarnish the way white gold does, which shows yellow through the rhodium after some years.
Is platinum worth more than gold?
Not automatically. Platinum was dearer for many years, but the rates have crossed each other since. What your piece is worth depends on the rate of today, and that is what the table above and our price page show. We work it out for you at the table in any case.
What happens to a platinum ring with stones in it?
We value it as two things: the platinum by weight and fineness, the stones separately by our gemmologist. You see both amounts apart from each other and decide afterwards whether you sell. If you would rather keep the stones, we take them out for you free of charge.
Do you buy industrial platinum as well?
Yes, we buy industrial platinum: crucibles, thermocouples, catalyst gauze and other leftover material. Please contact the head office in Eindhoven, where the specialists for industrial lots are based. They establish the fineness by analysis and make you an offer on the basis of the daily rate.
