How do you recognise platinum 999?

Look for the stamp 999 – on a bar it stands on the face, on industrial material often on an edge or an end. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 999 means 99.9% platinum.

If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your material stays intact.

Where you come across platinum 999

Virtually pure platinum you seldom come across in jewellery; this is the fineness of bars, of laboratory material and of industrial applications such as crucibles, wire and gauze.

With that industrial material in particular, the form is often unrecognisable. We therefore establish the fineness with X-ray analysis before anything is worked out, and that happens in your presence.

With business consignments we ask about the provenance. That is not distrust but a legal obligation; with a disposal document or a company name it is quickly settled.

What you see here is the pure material value. 99.9% of the rate, times the weight, with nothing deducted. We fetch that rate from the world market every minute and convert it at the euro rate of that moment.

Questions about Platinum 999

What does the stamp 999 on platinum mean?

It means that 999 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure platinum, or 99.9%. That is the highest fineness in the trade, and you find it on bars, on laboratory material and on industrial platinum such as crucibles, wire and gauze rather than on jewellery.

What is a gram of platinum 999 worth?

The amount follows the world market rate and therefore changes every minute; the current figure stands at the top of this page. The calculation itself never changes: the platinum rate per gram times 99.9%, times the weight of your material. The table above shows that for one to a hundred grams.

Do you buy industrial platinum as well?

Yes, and we see it in every imaginable form: crucibles, wire, gauze and laboratory remnants in which the platinum is not recognisable by eye. We establish the fineness with X-ray analysis in your presence and settle on the fine weight that comes out of it.

Why do you ask where my platinum comes from?

With business consignments the law requires us to record the provenance of precious metal, so this is an obligation rather than any kind of distrust. A disposal document or a company name is usually enough, and with those in hand the whole matter is settled in a few minutes.
