Pt950, Pt900 and Pt850: what the stamp says
Modern platinum jewellery nearly always carries the stamp Pt950: 950 thousandths of pure platinum, made up with alloying metals such as iridium, ruthenium, cobalt or copper. Older pieces, especially from before the eighties, are often Pt900; on chains Pt850 occurs as well, because that alloy is a little harder. Sometimes only PT or PLAT is stamped, and on American work from the middle of the twentieth century IRIDPLAT – platinum alloyed with iridium.
For us a stamp is an indication, not proof. We check the fineness with an X-ray analysis, in front of you and without damaging the piece.
Heavier than white gold – how to tell them apart
Platinum has a density of 21.45 grams per cubic centimetre; pure gold sits at 19.3 and the usual white gold alloys considerably lower. A white gold ring of the same size therefore weighs noticeably less – put two comparable rings side by side on a kitchen scale and the difference shows at once.
The colour gives it away as well. White gold owes its white shine to a thin layer of rhodium; when that wears, a yellow tinge shows through. Platinum is white through and through and stays that way – at most it grows a little duller the longer it is worn.
There is nothing wrong with a matt, dull platinum ring. That soft sheen is called patina and belongs to the metal. For the material value it makes no difference; so do not have the ring polished up first.
Wedding rings
Platinum was the metal for wedding rings for decades, precisely because it is so hard-wearing. A plain wedding ring is a simple valuation for us: weight times fineness times the rate of the day. That the ring has been narrowed, bent or engraved changes nothing about that.
Because platinum is heavier than gold, a platinum wedding ring of the same size weighs more than a gold one – and you see that back in the offer.
Settings with stones
Platinum holds stones exceptionally well; many diamond rings therefore have a platinum head. If there is a stone in your piece, our gemmologist assesses it apart from the metal. You see two amounts side by side and get the sum of them.

How the price comes about
With platinum the sum is the same as with gold: the fine weight – the pure platinum in the piece – times the rate of the day, less our margin. A ring of 8 grams with a Pt950 stamp contains 7.6 grams of pure platinum; that figure times the gram price on our platinum price page gives the order of magnitude of the offer.

My ring has no stamp. Can it still be platinum?
Yes. When a ring is made smaller the stamp sometimes disappears with it, and older pieces were not always stamped in the first place. We establish the metal free of charge with an X-ray analysis, while you watch, and you hear the result at the table.
How much is a platinum wedding ring worth?
The fine weight times the rate of the day: a ring of 6 grams with a Pt950 stamp contains 5.7 grams of pure platinum. The current gram price is on our platinum price page and is exactly the same at the table, so you can work out the order of magnitude in advance.
Is a platinum wedding ring worth more than a gold one?
That depends on the rate of today and on the weight. The rates of gold and platinum have crossed each other several times over the years, but a platinum ring does weigh more at the same size, so the outcome differs per piece.
What does Pt850 in my chain mean?
It means the piece consists of 850 thousandths of pure platinum. That alloy is a little harder than Pt950 and is therefore used above all for chains, clasps and other parts that have to stand up to wear. We simply settle on that fine weight at the rate of the day, so a lower fineness does not mean we will not buy the piece.
My platinum ring has gone dull. Does that push the price down?
No, and above all do not have it polished again before selling. That soft matt sheen is patina and belongs to worn platinum; unlike gold, platinum hardly wears away but rather moves the material about. We settle on weight and fineness, not on the shine, so polishing gains you nothing.
What happens to the diamond in my platinum ring?
Our gemmologist values it separately. You see the value of the platinum and of the stone apart from each other, and only then do you decide. If you would like to keep the stone, we take it out free of charge while you wait.
What identification do I need in order to sell?
You need valid photo identification: a passport, identity card or driving licence. We are legally required to record your details when buying precious metal, jewellery and watches. Without valid identification we are not allowed to buy anything.
When do I receive my money after the sale?
You receive your money as soon as you have agreed to the valuation. Smaller amounts are paid in cash; larger amounts reach your account by bank transfer within 24 hours. You sign the purchase receipt first, and payment follows.
