How do you recognise platinum 850?

Look for the stamp 850 – usually on the clasp of a chain, on a hinge or on the inside of a ring. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 850 means 85% platinum.

If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your jewellery stays intact.

Where you come across platinum 850

Eight hundred and fifty thousandths is the hardest of the usual platinum alloys and is therefore used above all for parts that have to bear wear: chains, clasps and hinges.

It does happen, then, that a single piece of jewellery carries two stamps – a chain of 850 with a pendant of 950. We weigh those parts separately, so that each part is settled at its own fineness.

A lower fineness does not mean that we will not buy the piece; it only means that there is slightly less pure platinum in every gram.

What you see here is the pure material value. 85% of the rate, times the weight, with nothing deducted. We fetch that rate from the world market every minute and convert it at the euro rate of that moment.

Questions about Platinum 850

What does the stamp 850 on platinum mean?

It means that 850 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure platinum, or 85%. It is the hardest of the usual platinum alloys, which is why it is chosen for parts that have to take wear: chains, clasps and hinges rather than the body of a ring.

What is a gram of platinum 850 worth?

The amount follows the world market rate and therefore changes every minute; the current figure stands at the top of this page. The calculation itself never changes: the platinum rate per gram times 85%, times the weight of your piece. The table above shows that for one to a hundred grams.

My necklace carries two different stamps – what now?

That is quite normal with platinum, because a chain is often made of the harder 850 while the pendant on it is 950. We take the piece apart where we can, weigh the parts separately and settle each one at its own fineness, so nothing is paid out at the lower figure unnecessarily.

Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?

Yes, the price you see here is the same price you get at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site is what applies.
