With vintage it is not how pristine a watch looks that counts, but how original it is. An unpolished case with honest marks of use often fetches more than a smartened-up example.

What makes a vintage watch valuable
Collectors look for watches that are still as they left the factory: the original dial, the original hands and crown, and an unpolished case with sharp edges. An evenly discoloured dial or a yellowed luminous layer – patina – is not a defect but a plus, as long as the ageing is even.
That makes vintage the opposite of what intuition says: the less has been done to the watch over the years, the more it is worth.
Leave the watch as it is. Do not polish it, do not have it smartened up and do not clean it yourself before you offer it. What has been polished away or replaced never comes back – and with collectors that costs value straight away.
Pitfalls we come across daily

From dress watch to service watch: the sub-markets
Vintage is not one uniform market. Classic men’s watches from the forties through to the eighties turn on the originality of case and dial. Ladies’ watches from that period strikingly often have a solid gold case, so that the gold value lays a fixed floor under the price. Mechanical chronographs are valued on their calibre – a movement such as the Valjoux 72 has a collectors’ market of its own. And with military-issue watches the engravings on the caseback are the proof of issue.
Every sub-market therefore has its own determinant of value: originality, weight of gold, calibre or provenance. Our watchmakers in Eindhoven know all four and will tell you at the valuation which market your watch belongs to – and what that means for the offer.
Service history: keep the receipts
A vintage movement may well have been serviced – indeed, a documented service that kept the original parts is a plus. What matters is what was replaced during those visits. Receipts and service reports tell that story and take away doubt.

What is my vintage watch worth?
That is decided by the marque, the calibre and above all the originality: an untouched example with an original dial and an unpolished case fetches most with collectors. Our watchmakers value it free of charge and substantiate the offer with sales of comparable examples.
My watch no longer runs. Is a valuation worthwhile?
Yes. With vintage, originality counts for more than whether the watch runs today, and a standstill is usually a matter of dried-out oil. We calculate a service visibly into the offer. What really pushes the price down are replaced original parts, such as a later dial or different hands.
What exactly is a redial?
A redial is a dial that has been relacquered and reprinted at a later date. From a distance such a dial often looks tidier than the original, but under the loupe the typeface, the placing of the text and the quality of the printing give it away. With collectors that costs a good deal of value, even when the watch looks well cared for.
Should I replace the strap before selling?
No, that does not pay. A leather strap is a wearing part and counts for hardly anything in the offer, so a new one will not earn itself back. An original steel bracelet or buckle, on the other hand, does count, and sometimes considerably. So bring that along, even if it looks worn or is lying loose in a drawer.
Is every old watch vintage and therefore valuable?
No, age alone makes no value. What counts are the marque, the calibre and the originality, and a great many old watches were made for which there is simply no demand. We tell you honestly when the proceeds will be modest rather than talking around it. The valuation costs nothing, so you will find out either way.
What identification do I need in order to sell?
You need valid photo identification: a passport, identity card or driving licence. We are legally required to record your details when buying precious metal, jewellery and watches. Without valid identification we are therefore not allowed to buy anything.
