Why these marques in particular trade briskly
For these five marques there is a large, daily second-hand market. References such as the Rolex Datejust, the Omega Speedmaster, the Cartier Santos or the Breitling Navitimer change hands somewhere in the world every day. That makes the valuation quick and verifiable: we do not have to estimate, we can look up the current trading figures and let you watch.
That broad demand also makes these marques hold their value. A Datejust or a Speedmaster always finds a buyer, in good times and in leaner ones. That translates into an offer sitting close to the current trade value.
Box and papers to hand? Bring everything. With sought-after references a complete set soon makes ten to twenty per cent difference to the proceeds.
The five marques, each with a point of its own
- Rolex – the reference number and the completeness set the price, not the material
- Omega – the calibre in the case often counts for more than what the dial says; a Speedmaster with the old calibre 321 is a class apart
- Cartier – the gold case forms a floor under the price, the brand value of a Tank or Santos comes on top of it
- Breitling – a chronograph marque: the working of the chronograph and the movement weigh heaviest
- TAG Heuer – if the dial says Heuer alone, it is vintage and an entirely different market
What sets the price: reference, condition and completeness
The starting point is always the reference number: the type code the manufacturer stamps into the case, fixing the model, the version and the material. With Rolex it sits between the lugs, with other marques usually on the caseback. One digit of difference can mean a different version – and therefore a different price.
After that come condition and completeness. Original parts, a case that has not been over-polished and a demonstrable service history all support the offer; box and papers make the set complete. What you need not do: have the watch cleaned or repaired before you come – you seldom earn that cost back, because we already count a service into the offer visibly.

We assess watches at the head office in Eindhoven, where our watchmaker works. He opens the case, checks the movement and the serial numbers, and substantiates the offer with what that reference is doing in the market today.
If you live far away, you can hand the watch in at any of our 45 locations in the Netherlands and Belgium. It then travels insured to Eindhoven and you only decide after the valuation – which is free and without obligation.

„I'll start by sharing my experience at the Goud-Wissel office in Eindhoven, where I initially ended up on the advice of an acquaintance. I already found it strange that their website didn't tell me roughly what I would receive per gram [in my case 18-carat gold] for the jewellery I wanted to sell. When I came in, the introductory questions felt like a kind of check on whether I knew what I was talking about. Even more: it gave me the creeping feeling that this conversation would be directly linked to the amount they would offer me for my gold. As a layman, I admitted that the generally known current gold price was my only 'knowledge'. What followed was a whole story about the broad concept of this valuation and a list of elements that made it logical that the buying price came nowhere near it. I had to realise that the basic costs of the gold exchange office: rent / fittings / staff / outsourced melting etc. were taken into account [read: deducted] from what was paid out to the customer at the bottom line. After testing, I was then offered 4,000 in short order. I had seen on a website that X-Goud also has a branch in Eindhoven, and it turned out to be almost around the corner. The owner happened to be there because the premises were being fitted out, but even though I had no appointment I was still received very warmly. After a clear, expert, no-obligation explanation and testing, Ekin named a rather different buying price compared to the Goud-Wisselkantoor where I had been an hour earlier. And luckily I had left to look for a kind of second opinion. X-GOUD bought my jewellery for 7,150!!!!!!!! A GOOD 3,000 MORE! Sorry for the long-winded build-up, but this piece really should have been written entirely in capitals so that everyone clearly reads how, in my view, to put it politely, they rip you off right to your face at the Goud-Wisselkantoor. Ekin, thanks again for your friendly service... a pity you couldn't offer coffee yet haha, but the offer for my jewellery more than makes up for it.”

Questions about selling branded watch
What is my branded watch worth?
That depends above all on the reference, the condition and the completeness – with branded watches the trade value counts, not the material. Our watchmaker looks up the current figures for your reference and substantiates the offer with them. The valuation is free and without obligation.
My marque is not among them. Do you buy it all the same?
Probably yes. The marques on this page are the ones we see most often, but our watchmaker assesses beyond them too and we buy broadly. A less familiar Swiss name may well have a good calibre and a gold case. Do come by, or let us know in advance so the right specialist is ready for you.
Do I need to know which model I have beforehand?
No, you do not have to work that out. The reference number helps and speeds up the preparation, but our watchmaker establishes the model, the version and the year themselves by opening the case and reading the numbers. If you do know the number, pass it on when making the appointment.
Why is a steel watch sometimes worth more than a gold one?
Because with branded watches it is the trade value that counts and not the material. A sought-after steel sports reference can do considerably more in the market than a gold watch of a model few people ask for. With the gold example the weight of the gold does always form the floor: our offer does not drop below it.
How quickly do I have my money?
Within 24 hours of your agreement. Smaller amounts can be paid in cash, larger amounts go to your account by bank transfer; there are legal limits for that. We always ask for valid photo identification and record the transaction, in your interest as well. You only decide after the offer, which carries no obligation.
What identification do I need in order to sell?
You need valid photo identification: a passport, identity card or driving licence. We are legally required to record your details when buying precious metal, jewellery and watches. Without valid identification we are therefore not allowed to buy anything.
