A floor that does not drop
With a gold pocket watch the sum begins at the case: weight times fineness times the daily rate. That amount is the lower limit of our offer, whatever fashion or the market does. A heavy 18-carat savonnette case soon weighs fifty to eighty grams – so a serious sum sits there before we have even looked at the movement.
On top of that comes the premium for what the watch is worth as a watch: the marque, the quality of the calibre, complications such as a chronograph or a repeater, and the condition. With a handsome example the trade value sits clearly above the gold value; we work out both and you receive the higher one.
Do not let a stopped watch be settled as scrap gold before a watchmaker has looked inside it. The case is the floor, but the movement can lift it well above that – and you cannot see that from the outside.
Savonnette or open case
A savonnette has a sprung lid over the glass; a lepine – an open case – does not. The savonnette contains more gold and therefore weighs more heavily in the material value. For the trade value what counts above all is whether the lid still closes tightly and whether the hinges have no play.
Inside there is often a second lid, the dust cover. On a gold watch that is usually gold as well and it simply counts towards the weight – although a lower fineness is sometimes stamped into it than into the outer case.
Reading fineness marks
The stamp usually sits on the inside of the lids. If it is missing or you are in doubt, we measure the fineness with X-ray analysis – free of charge, and without damaging the case.
- 750 or 18K – 18 carat, usual on Swiss quality watches
- 585 or 14K – 14 carat, common on German and American cases
- Old Dutch assay marks – the little lion or the oak leaf in pre-war cases
- Filled cases – gold filled or plaqué is not solid gold; we say so honestly straight away

How much gold is there in a gold pocket watch?
The case of a gentleman’s pocket watch generally weighs thirty to eighty grams, depending on the size and the shape of the lid. The movement and the glass do not count; we weigh the case separately, while you watch.
My pocket watch no longer runs. Is it then only gold value?
Not automatically, so hold off on that conclusion. A stopped movement is usually a matter of servicing and seldom an irreparable fault; with good calibres the trade value stays well above the gold value. Our watchmaker therefore opens the case and assesses the movement first, and only then is anything worked out.
Is a monogram in the lid a problem?
For the gold value no, because weight remains weight and that floor does not change. For the trade value a personal engraving does push the offer down a little, because a next owner can do nothing with it. Never have a monogram ground away: it costs gold and thins the lid, so it costs you twice over.
Is the movement taken out for the weighing?
Yes, because we weigh the gold alone: the case and the gold lids, without the movement, the glass and the dial. That happens at the table while you watch, so that you know exactly where the material amount comes from. We then assess the movement separately on its own trade value.
What identification do I need in order to sell?
You need valid photo identification: a passport, identity card or driving licence. We are legally required to record your details when buying precious metal, jewellery and watches. Without valid identification we are therefore not allowed to buy anything.
When do I receive my money after the sale?
You receive your money as soon as you have agreed to the valuation. Smaller amounts we pay in cash; larger amounts reach your account by bank transfer within 24 hours. You sign the purchase receipt first, and payment follows after that.
