Small production runs, wide differences
In this segment watches are built in small numbers, and that makes every reference a market of its own. Two watches from the same maker can be worth a multiple of one another – the difference sits in the reference, the version and the complication. A steel Royal Oak plays in an entirely different market from a gold dress watch by that same Audemars Piguet.
Complications lift the value, but they also make the valuation harder. A perpetual calendar keeps track of month lengths and leap years by itself; a minute repeater strikes the time audibly on request. Our watchmaker judges whether such a mechanism still works and whether the movement is original, and then looks up the current trading figures for precisely that version.
Papers and provenance weigh heaviest here
In no other segment does provenance make so much difference. Box, warranty card, purchase receipt and service history take away doubt about originality – and doubt is the most expensive thing there is in this price class. Some makers, such as Patek Philippe, supply an extract from their own archive on request; if you have one, bring it.
If the papers are missing, we simply buy the watch. Our watchmaker then checks the case and movement numbers themselves, but reckon on a lower offer than with a complete set.
Discretion. Valuations in this class take place by appointment in Eindhoven, in a separate room. Payment runs by bank transfer and we record no more than the law requires of us.

- Audemars Piguet – almost everything turns on the Royal Oak of 1972 and its integrated bracelet
- A. Lange & Söhne – German haute horlogerie from Glashütte, re-founded in 1990, in very small runs
- Patek Philippe – the Geneva archive confirms whether case and movement belong together; Calatrava and Nautilus are the best-known lines
- Jaeger-LeCoultre – the movement maker to the high-end marques, with the Reverso of 1931 as its best-known model
- IWC – large, sturdy in-house calibres that service well; Portugieser and pilot’s watches to the fore
- Vacheron Constantin – in business without interruption since 1755, with classics such as the Patrimony and the sporting Overseas

Valuations in this class take place by appointment at the head office in Eindhoven, where our watchmaker works. He opens the case, checks whether the case and movement number belong together and assesses the finishing – with haute horlogerie the proof of authenticity sits in the movement itself.

„I'll start by sharing my experience at the Goud-Wissel office in Eindhoven, where I initially ended up on the advice of an acquaintance. I already found it strange that their website didn't tell me roughly what I would receive per gram [in my case 18-carat gold] for the jewellery I wanted to sell. When I came in, the introductory questions felt like a kind of check on whether I knew what I was talking about. Even more: it gave me the creeping feeling that this conversation would be directly linked to the amount they would offer me for my gold. As a layman, I admitted that the generally known current gold price was my only 'knowledge'. What followed was a whole story about the broad concept of this valuation and a list of elements that made it logical that the buying price came nowhere near it. I had to realise that the basic costs of the gold exchange office: rent / fittings / staff / outsourced melting etc. were taken into account [read: deducted] from what was paid out to the customer at the bottom line. After testing, I was then offered 4,000 in short order. I had seen on a website that X-Goud also has a branch in Eindhoven, and it turned out to be almost around the corner. The owner happened to be there because the premises were being fitted out, but even though I had no appointment I was still received very warmly. After a clear, expert, no-obligation explanation and testing, Ekin named a rather different buying price compared to the Goud-Wisselkantoor where I had been an hour earlier. And luckily I had left to look for a kind of second opinion. X-GOUD bought my jewellery for 7,150!!!!!!!! A GOOD 3,000 MORE! Sorry for the long-winded build-up, but this piece really should have been written entirely in capitals so that everyone clearly reads how, in my view, to put it politely, they rip you off right to your face at the Goud-Wisselkantoor. Ekin, thanks again for your friendly service... a pity you couldn't offer coffee yet haha, but the offer for my jewellery more than makes up for it.”

What is my Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet worth?
That differs per reference more sharply than in any other segment: version, complication and completeness can make a multiple of difference. Our watchmaker looks up the recent trading and auction figures for precisely your version and shows them to you alongside the offer.
Do you handle the sale discreetly?
Yes, and in this segment that is the normal way of working. Valuations take place by appointment in a separate room at the head office in Eindhoven, with nobody looking on. Payment runs by bank transfer and reaches your account within 24 hours. No name, photograph or piece goes out into the world.
How much do box and papers make in this segment?
More than anywhere else; reckon on ten to twenty per cent. With modern references complete sets have become all but standard, so buyers allow for a noticeable discount on a watch offered on its own. If you have the box but not the papers, bring everything there is: every part counts.
My watch has a complication that no longer works.
That need not be a problem and it is rarely beyond repair. We calculate the service cost in and name that amount separately, so that you see what the watch itself brings in and which part goes to the repair. Above all, do not have it repaired beforehand: in this segment those costs run high.
