Broken and incomplete simply counts
Old platinum goes into the melt; what it looks like is beside the point. A snapped link, a bent ring, a single earring whose partner has been lost – it is all settled on fine weight: the pure platinum inside it, against the daily rate. With a piece of Pt900 that is 900 thousandths of the weight.
With platinum in particular it pays to bring the small pieces along as well. At a density of 21.45 grams per cubic centimetre the metal is heavier than gold, so a modest handful weighs more than you think.
Old settings and art deco pieces
At the beginning of the twentieth century – the Edwardian and art deco periods, roughly 1900 to 1940 – platinum was the metal for fine setting work: brooches, filigree rings with openwork wire, and diamond settings on a gold shank. Those pieces are by no means always stamped, and the combination of two metals in one piece of jewellery occurs often.
We take the metals apart at the table and settle each part separately – the gold as gold, the platinum as platinum, each against its own daily rate. If a stone is still in it, our gemmologist assesses that on its own.
In two minds between white gold, silver and platinum? By eye they are barely to be told apart. Bring everything that is white and metallic; the analysis is free and you know within a few minutes.
Leftover lots from goldsmiths
Out of workshops come lots that seem to have nothing to do with jewellery any more: wire, sheet offcuts, clipped settings, filings. We sort such a lot per metal and per fineness and weigh each group separately on the calibrated scales, with you standing there.
With larger lots we can fix the rate for an agreed period, so that the moment of delivery makes no difference. Announce such a lot in advance at the head office in Eindhoven.
How we establish the fineness
Platinum is alloyed with metals such as iridium, ruthenium or copper, and the fineness differs per period and per maker. We therefore measure every piece with X-ray fluorescence (XRF): an analysis that shows exactly which metals are in it and in what proportion, without attacking the piece.
The measurement happens in your presence and you see the result on the screen before we make an offer. After that the sum is verifiable: measured fineness times weight times the daily rate.

Does broken platinum yield less than a sound piece of jewellery?
No. With old platinum we settle on fine weight – the pure platinum inside it – and that does not change because of a break or a missing part. Repairing before selling therefore serves no purpose.
What exactly is fine weight?
The pure precious metal in an object: weight times fineness. A broken ring of 10 grams with a Pt900 stamp has a fine weight of 9 grams of platinum, and that times the daily rate is the basis of the offer.
Is unstamped platinum worth less?
No. The value follows from the measured fineness, not from the stamp. We establish that fineness free of charge with an X-ray analysis, and after that unstamped platinum counts exactly as heavily.
My ring is part gold and part platinum. How do you work that out?
We separate the parts and settle each metal against its own rate. You see both amounts separately on the statement, and the stone – if there is one – is assessed apart from them.
Do you also buy filings and sawdust from a workshop?
Yes. We analyse the lot, establish the fine weight and settle on that against the daily rate. Announce larger lots in advance at the head office in Eindhoven; there the rate can be fixed if you wish.
How do I know whether my old setting is platinum?
You only know for certain after a measurement. Old settings are often unstamped, and white gold, silver and platinum cannot be told apart by eye. We establish the metal free of charge with an X-ray analysis, while you watch.
What identification do I need in order to sell?
You need valid photo identification: a passport, identity card or driving licence. We are legally required to record your details when buying precious metal, jewellery and watches. Without valid identification we are therefore not allowed to buy anything.
When do I receive my money after the sale?
You receive your money as soon as you have agreed to the valuation. Smaller amounts we pay in cash; larger amounts reach your account by bank transfer within 24 hours. You sign the purchase receipt first, and payment follows after that.
