A small market with two familiar names
Palladium is hardly ever struck into coins. In practice it comes down to two: the Palladium Maple Leaf from Canada, struck since 2005, and the Palladium American Eagle from the United States, since 2017. Both are one troy ounce at 999.5 thousandths.
Because both are almost pure and directly tradable, you sit close to the world market price here. The fine weight of one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams; that figure times the rate of this moment, minus our margin, gives the amount in the table above.
The rate moves faster here. Palladium depends more heavily on industry than the other three, so the amount can differ noticeably from one day to the next. With larger lots we can fix the rate for an agreed period.
How we check a palladium coin
Palladium and platinum cannot be told apart with the naked eye, but their density differs considerably: palladium is markedly lighter at the same size. We check the weight, the diameter and the thickness against the specifications of that coin and, where there is doubt, measure the fineness with X-ray analysis.
That measurement is non-destructive and happens at the table while you watch. Coins in a sealed capsule you may simply leave as they are; that saves us checking and protects the surface.

Why does the amount differ so much from one week to the next?
Because palladium is the most industrial of the four precious metals: the great majority goes into catalytic converters for petrol cars. The dampening effect that gold has from investors is largely missing here, so the swings turn out larger. Our rates page shows the current movement, updated every minute.
Is a palladium coin worth more than a palladium bar?
Per gram of fine palladium the difference is small, because both are almost pure and directly tradable. What can differ is the premium: on a coin a slightly higher premium was paid at purchase, and that premium does not come back to you on sale. We work both out at the table.
How do you tell palladium from platinum?
By the weight in relation to the size. Palladium is considerably lighter than platinum at the same diameter and thickness, so the difference shows up on the scales at once. Where there is any doubt we measure the fineness with X-ray analysis, which is non-destructive and happens while you watch.
