How do you recognise fine silver?
Look for the stamp 999 – usually on the inside of a ring, on the clasp of a chain or on the rim or underside of an object. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 999 means 99.9% silver.
If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your item stays intact.
Where you come across fine silver
Fine silver is virtually pure silver and therefore too soft for objects in daily use: a spoon of 999 would bend. You come across it above all as a bar and as an investment coin, such as the Maple Leaf and the Wiener Philharmoniker.

What does the stamp 999 on silver mean?
It means that 999 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure silver, or 99.9%. That is the highest fineness in the trade and the fineness used for bars and investment coins. It is too soft for cutlery or anything else meant for daily use.
What is a gram of fine silver worth?

My silver coins have gone dark – should I polish them?
Please do not. The dark haze is a surface reaction with the air and says nothing about the fineness; we measure what is underneath regardless. Polishing removes a thin layer of silver every time, so it costs you weight, and with collectable coins it can cost value beyond the metal as well.
Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?
