How do you recognise 835 silver?
Look for the stamp 835 – usually on the underside of a spoon, on the rim of a dish or on the back of a piece of jewellery. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 835 means 83.5% silver.
If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your item stays intact.
Where you come across 835 silver
Eight hundred and thirty-five thousandths was the German standard fineness for decades, and you therefore find it a great deal in canteens of cutlery and in tableware from Germany and Austria.
A good deal of twentieth-century Dutch silverwork sits at this fineness as well. Beside the number there is then often an assay mark from the Waarborg, confirming that the fineness has been officially established.
The difference from sterling looks small, but with a canteen of several kilos it tells in the yield. We always calculate on the actual fine weight.
What you see here is the pure material value. 83.5% of the rate, times the weight, with nothing deducted. We fetch that rate from the world market every minute and convert it at the euro rate of that moment.

Questions about Silver 835
What does the stamp 835 on silver mean?
It means that 835 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure silver, or 83.5%. That was the German standard fineness for decades, which is why it turns up so often in canteens of cutlery and tableware from Germany and Austria, and in Dutch silverwork of the twentieth century.
What is a gram of 835 silver worth?
The amount follows the world market rate and therefore changes every minute; the current figure stands at the top of this page. The calculation itself never changes: the silver rate per gram times 83.5%, times the weight of your piece. The table above shows that for one to a hundred grams.
Is a whole canteen of cutlery worth weighing?
Certainly. The difference between 835 and sterling looks small on a single spoon, but a canteen easily runs to several kilos and then the gap tells in the total. We weigh every piece, calculate on the actual fine weight, and set the knives aside because their handles are filled.
Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?
Yes, the price you see here is the same price you get at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site is what applies.
