How do you recognise 800 silver?

Look for the stamp 800 – usually on the underside of a spoon, on the rim of a dish or on the inside of a pocket watch case. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 800 means 80% silver.

If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your item stays intact.

Where you come across 800 silver

Eight hundred thousandths is the lowest fineness you come across regularly: exactly four fifths pure silver. It was usual in Germany, Italy and Austria, and a great deal of older cutlery and many pocket watch cases carry this stamp.

Because of the higher copper content, 800 is harder than sterling and tarnishes a little faster. For the value that makes no difference: we calculate on the silver that is in it.

If it says only 800 with no further marks, that is simply a fineness indication. Do not confuse it with figures such as 90 or 100 on silver-plated cutlery: those refer to the thickness of a layer and not to solid silver.

What you see here is the pure material value. 80% of the rate, times the weight, with nothing deducted. We fetch that rate from the world market every minute and convert it at the euro rate of that moment.

Questions about silver 800

What does the stamp 800 on silver mean?

It means that 800 of every 1000 parts by weight are pure silver, or exactly four fifths. It is the lowest fineness you come across regularly, and it was usual in Germany, Italy and Austria for cutlery and for pocket watch cases.

What is a gram of 800 silver worth?

The amount follows the world market rate and therefore changes every minute; the current figure stands at the top of this page. The calculation itself never changes: the silver rate per gram times 80%, times the weight of your piece. The table above shows that for one to a hundred grams.

Is 90 or 100 on my cutlery the same as 800?

No, and the difference matters a great deal. The figures 90 and 100 on plated cutlery refer to the thickness of a silver layer over a base metal, not to solid silver, so there is only a fraction of a gram of silver on each piece. Only a fineness stamp such as 800 indicates solid silver.

Do I get the same price at a branch as on the website?

Yes, the price you see here is the same price you get at all 45 of our locations. At the table we only still establish the weight and the fineness of your pieces. For the fineness we measure, the price per gram shown on this site is what applies.
