How do you recognise sterling silver?
Look for the stamp 925 – usually on the inside of a ring, on the clasp of a chain or on the rim or underside of an object. That number stands for the quantity of thousandths of pure material: 925 means 92.5% silver.
If there is no stamp at all, we measure the fineness with an acid test or – with valuable pieces – with X-ray analysis. That last method is non-destructive: your item stays intact.
Where you come across sterling silver
Sterling is the international standard for silver jewellery and better tableware. The remaining 75 thousandths are usually copper, and it is precisely that copper which makes the metal hard enough to make something that keeps its shape.
Virtually everything sold as silver jewellery carries this stamp, from rings to necklaces, and designer work and branded silver are almost always 925 as well.
With cutlery, watch the handles of the knives: those are generally filled with resin or pitch, so that only the silver casing counts towards the weight. With spoons and forks the full weight counts.
