From the 5402 to the 16202
The Royal Oak appeared in 1972 as the 5402ST: a 39-millimetre steel sports watch designed by Gérald Genta, with the extra-thin calibre 2121. The trade calls that size the Jumbo. The line continued in the 15202 (until 2021) and since 2022 in the 16202 with calibre 7121.
Alongside it the 'regular' Royal Oak with date: the 39-millimetre 15300, the 41-millimetre 15400 with calibre 3120, and since 2019 the 15500 with calibre 4302, succeeded by the 15510. The chronographs (26320, 26331, 26240) and the 33 and 37-millimetre ladies' series each have their own market.
What we look at

- Case and bracelet – the brushed surfaces and the polished bevels, on case and links alike
- Dial – Petite or Grande Tapisserie, colour and condition
- Movement – 2121, 3120, 4302 or 7121, and the service history

The bevels give away every polish. The Royal Oak is finished entirely by hand, with sharp polished edges between brushed surfaces. Anyone who has a jeweller 'freshen it up' loses exactly the detail a buyer looks for.
The Jumbo and the rest
The 15202 and the 16202 are the references that stay closest to the original, and the trade treats them that way: their market is separate from that of the 15400 and the 15500. Rare dial colours and anniversary editions are a category of their own again.
With the gold Royal Oaks there is a material floor beneath the offer, as case and bracelet contain a great deal of 18-carat gold. We calculate both that floor and the trade value.

„I'll start by sharing my experience at the Goud-Wissel office in Eindhoven, where I initially ended up on the advice of an acquaintance. I already found it strange that their website didn't tell me roughly what I would receive per gram [in my case 18-carat gold] for the jewellery I wanted to sell. When I came in, the introductory questions felt like a kind of check on whether I knew what I was talking about. Even more: it gave me the creeping feeling that this conversation would be directly linked to the amount they would offer me for my gold. As a layman, I admitted that the generally known current gold price was my only 'knowledge'. What followed was a whole story about the broad concept of this valuation and a list of elements that made it logical that the buying price came nowhere near it. I had to realise that the basic costs of the gold exchange office: rent / fittings / staff / outsourced melting etc. were taken into account [read: deducted] from what was paid out to the customer at the bottom line. After testing, I was then offered 4,000 in short order. I had seen on a website that X-Goud also has a branch in Eindhoven, and it turned out to be almost around the corner. The owner happened to be there because the premises were being fitted out, but even though I had no appointment I was still received very warmly. After a clear, expert, no-obligation explanation and testing, Ekin named a rather different buying price compared to the Goud-Wisselkantoor where I had been an hour earlier. And luckily I had left to look for a kind of second opinion. X-GOUD bought my jewellery for 7,150!!!!!!!! A GOOD 3,000 MORE! Sorry for the long-winded build-up, but this piece really should have been written entirely in capitals so that everyone clearly reads how, in my view, to put it politely, they rip you off right to your face at the Goud-Wisselkantoor. Where do I find the reference on my Royal Oak?
The reference and the case number are engraved on the caseback, and they are also on the warranty card. On older models the caseback often carries a letter with a number, from which the production period can be determined. Our watchmaker reads this at the appointment and compares it with the movement.
My Royal Oak has been polished. How much does that matter?
It matters, and with the Royal Oak more than with most watches. If the sharp polished edges between the brushed surfaces have been rounded off, a buyer sees it immediately. A service at Audemars Piguet itself refinishes the case to the factory standard and is accepted in the trade. We tell you what we see.
Is a 15400 still in demand now that the 15500 and 15510 exist?
Yes. The 15400 is a widely worn reference with its own, readily comparable market. It usually sits somewhat differently from its successors, because calibre 3120 is older and the dial slightly different. Precisely because so many change hands, we can substantiate the offer closely.
I no longer have the papers. Will you still buy it?
Yes. We establish authenticity from the watch itself: our watchmaker opens the case and compares calibre, numbers and finishing with what belongs to the reference. Without a warranty card a dealer has to account for the provenance himself and allows for that. Invoices or service records help, so bring them.
Does the gold of a gold Royal Oak count?
Yes. A Royal Oak in rose, yellow or white gold contains a great deal of 18-carat gold in case and bracelet. That material value is a floor beneath the offer, whatever the watch market does. With a well-kept example the trade value lies well above it.
